What do we support?

The National Latinx Theater Initiative is intended to supports the ecosystem of theater organizations and ensembles founded by, led by, and serving the Latinx community, U.S. Brazilian community, and Latinx indigenous communities. The work of these organizations includes producing, presenting, and commissioning contemporary and/or classic theater works and performance art in English, Spanish, Portuguese and bilingually. Eligible theaters are those whose focus is Latinx theater and whose board and, generally, staff are generally 51% Latinx.

They often sponsor readings, developmental workshops, conversations, festivals, summits, and conferences. Their work is rooted in the full diversity, complexity, and intersectionality of the Latinx experience.

Theaters are recognized, nationally or locally, as part of the contemporary Latinx theater movement, which has been in existence for more than 70 years. Contemporary Latinx theaters are part of a Latinx theater trajectory from the earliest days of the colonization of what we now call the United States of America.

Latinx theaters that wished to apply for funding responded to an Eligibility Questionnaire addressing the eligibility criteria established by the national Steering Committee. Eligible Latinx theaters were invited to submit a full proposal by July 17, 2023.

NLTI is not focused on the diversity and inclusivity efforts of predominantly or historically non-Latinx institutions, nor artistic work by and with Latinx artists that will be viewed by predominantly non-Latinx audiences. The National Latinx Theater Initiative is not intended to support other artistic disciplines beyond the theatrical realm, such as dance, music, or film/TV.
